Air Compressor Types – Why Would You Pick One Over the Other?

I do not know much about you, but creating a project using the right tools makes all the difference. Especially time saved. One of the best tools available in the toolkit is a good air compressor. As with most things, choosing the right one is important to safety as well as performance. Please understand the following before purchasing.

Rotary and Reciprocating Air Compressors

The most common compressor is a reciprocating compressor. Simple piston-driven design makes it easy to manufacture, saving you money. The piston is used to increase the pressure in the cylinder and store it in the holding tank.

Rotary compressors work in a more complex and completely different way. Pressure is generated using two helical screws rotating in a closed chamber. Rotary compressors are as efficient as they are large. If size is a control factor for your situation, use a reciprocating air compressor.

Duty cycle

To keep the compressor running, such as spray painting, use a rotary air compressor. The reciprocating air compressors are suitable for air tools that use short bursts without frequent use of pressure. Rotary compressors exhibit a 100% duty cycle, and the reciprocal is typically 50%, taking a break and creating a 50% new pressure.

Power Type

The most common type of power selection is diesel or electric. Determining what is more appropriate for the situation is largely determined by the circumstances in which the air compressor must operate.

Diesel compressors can be operated for a long time. It is popular in the construction industry because it is portable even if the output is high. Diesel fuel can be easily used at a remote location, but proper ventilation is required to limit its use to the outside.
Application.

On the other hand, electric air compressors can be installed indoors and are better suited for permanent installation. There is a larger model, but most are handheld devices for powering hand tools and other personal applications. Lightweight and highly portable, it is limited by the availability of power outlets.

Noise

Basically, the larger the air compressor, the louder the noise. Since the reciprocating air compressor is typically small and operates at 50% duty cycle, this handheld device should not present many problems. However, large diesel engines at construction sites need to be evaluated for environmental noise during construction. Permanently installed devices require a dedicated factory room with some locations that require acoustical control.

Portability

Obviously, smaller mutual units can easily be thrown behind your vehicle. Larger diesel power units can be fitted with traction units, but tow units are heavy. Vehicle selection is important here. Check the maximum towing load of the vehicle.

PSI

PSI – pounds per square inch. This is a universal assessment of the amount of pressure produced (Europe uses a unit called the rod). The compressor should be used to evaluate the optimum pressure load of the equipment. Also, whether the equipment requires continuous or intermittent pressure flow (see above). Most hand tools require about 90 psi, so choose a compressor with a blocking limit of about 110 psi to allow line leakage. Essentially, the more often you use a tool attached to an air compressor, the more pressure you will need.

A compact portable air compressor like me is suitable for most homes. When you hit a gun, stay away. By matching the right air compressor with the right tools for your work, there is a noticeable difference in the speed and quality of your next project’s construction.
